WHAT IS OVERLAY PLYWOOD

Overlay plywood is a thin plywood panel surfaced with a resin-treated paper or fiber overlay bonded under heat and pressure. The overlay creates a smoother, more uniform face compared to standard plywood, improving surface durability and finish consistency. Thin overlay panels are commonly used as substrates, templates, and backing materials where a stable, smooth surface is required.

SPECIALTY APPLICATION

Overlay plywood is considered a specialty panel because its resin-treated surface provides improved smoothness and durability compared to untreated plywood. The enhanced face makes it suitable for painted finishes, templates, jigs, cabinetry backing, and applications requiring a consistent, finished surface in a lightweight format.

FEATURES

  • Resin-Treated Surface – Overlay layer creates a smoother and more uniform finish.

  • Lightweight Construction – Thin panel format allows easy handling and fabrication.

  • Improved Paint Adhesion – Overlay surface accepts primers and coatings more consistently than raw veneer.

  • Stable Substrate – Provides a balanced plywood core for dimensional stability.

  • Fabrication Ready – Can be cut, drilled, and shaped using standard woodworking tools.

Constructed from thin wood veneers laminated in a cross-grain configuration to provide strength and dimensional stability relative to panel thickness.

FACE

Features a resin-treated overlay bonded to the plywood face, producing a smooth, consistent surface suitable for finishing or coating.

ADHESIVE

Bonded using structural adhesive systems designed to maintain panel integrity under normal interior or light-duty service conditions.

EDGE
